Yeezus

The day after my mothers birthday, June 18 2013, Kanye West released his 6th album entitled Yeezus. It is a mix of new age sounds, soul samples, and hip hop. This is my review of Kanye West's 10 track album, Yeezus. It opens with the demented sounds of "On Sight". I enjoy this track a lot. Kanye is kind of holding back when it comes to the rap but the beat intrigues me. Then it drops into a sample of a choir song from the 60's. It really sets the mood for whats to come. Then once you hear the beauty of that you go right back into the demented sounds from early. After that "experience" of track one you get to " Black Skinhead". I don't like this track, but the more I think about it I like this track. I don't like what Kanye is saying, but I feel that way for most of this project. The beat has this quality that I hate but I also like. This is one of my less favorites though. Following is "I am a God". Another track I don't like. It is just too bland. This album is like that for me. It has its ups and its downs. Right after a up comes a down and it takes a bit to get to another up. After those two down tracks you get my second favorite track on the album in " New Slaves". This song goes hard. The beat. I like what Kanye is saying. I get turned up to this song. And the ending with Frank Ocean is just too nice. But right after that up comes my least favorite track in " Hold my Liquor". I hate this song. Chief Keef auto tuned  and singing doesn't work. The beat is bad. I just skip it every time I hear it. Then another one of my favorites comes in "I'm in it". This track gets overlooked a lot. The production on this is great. I turn up to this song a lot too. Kanye goes in and spits hard on his last verse too. Next is my favorite track on the album in "Blood on the leaves". Kanye has said this track was supposed to open the album with these. I understand why. It has a very solid sound. It has the feel of what he was trying to bring forth with this project. He is spitting too. The song has no real message like "Black Skinhead" or " New Slaves", but it is powerful. After that is another one of my favorites coming in the track called "Guilt Trip". It sounds like what "808's and Heartbreak" should have been. He also uses Kid Cudi well on this track. After that is my last least favorite track on the album, "Send it Up". I like the use of the dancehall styling but this song feels like a waste of space. The last track is "Bound 2". It feels like the old "Late Registration" Kanye. It is a beautiful song. The video ruins it though. But this is a real highlight on the album. A good closer. Overall Kanye West's 2013 realease album entitled "Yeezus has its moments. A real roller coaster ride with great ups and terrible downs. But when looked at as a whole it is pretty solid. Overall I'm giving this an 7.8 out of 10. You should check it out. More reviews coming soon.

Section 80. pt 2

I'm going to finish this long overdue review. So I left off on "Poe Mans Dream" so the next track after that is "Spiteful Chant." I don't really like this song. Kendrick is doing his thing on here as always, but the hook on here and the production is too mediocre. It doesn't fit the full product to me. It just lacks something I can't explain it. The next track is one of my favorites. I don't know what it is about "Chapter 10", but it is too nice. The beat, Kendrick is nice on it. The singing on the track. This is a track I wish was about 3 minutes but its a little over a minute long. The next 6 songs are the main reason this project is so great. Starting with "Keisha's Song". Great use of the singer Astro-Bot's voice. Has a solid message behind it. Very powerful song, one of my favorites on the entire album. After is the very upbeat "Rigamortis". One of Kendrick's best tracks lyrically. He just jumps into the beat and it seems like his flow is endless on this track. Following that is the track " Kush & Corinthians". Very solid. Nice hook. It's interesting how Kendrick goes from a slow song to a very fast one to another slow one and it feels natural. This is another one of my favorite's on the project. Right after is one of the songs that got Kendrick a lot of attention, " Blow my High". This song is nearly perfect. The way he brings up Aaliyah. The way he references other artist who have past away. The only thing I wish was used on this more was the small sample of Aaliyah towards the end. Following that is a song I used to skip every time, but now I think its my favorite on the whole album. "Ab Soul's Outro" has the best jazz instrumental I have ever heard on a rap song. It just flows so beautiful. It doesn't feel like rap. It feels like spoken word poetry behind a jazz track. The things said are really nice too. If you like jazz you will love this song. If you don't you will just skip it. But this song is perfection in my mind. Then the last track of the entire project come in " Hiii Power". I really like this song. The beat, the singing, and as expected Kendrick is just spitting. Dropping memorable lines too. It really brings the narrative set in the previous tracks and the whole feel of the album together. A great track. Section 80 is Kendrick Lamar's debut album from 2011. It has many up's and very few down's. A very good album. With the exception of "Spiteful Chant" and "Fuck Your  Ethnicity" I give this entire album a 9.8 out of 10.

First Review (Finally) (Part 1)

So finally I'm doing a review. The video for this review is also coming soon. Yea, we getting back on track. Anyway, I'm going to give my review on an older album that a lot of people have heard. Even though a lot of people have heard it, I still want to give my opinion on it. One of my favorite albums of 2011, yea I know it wasn't that long ago, Kendrick Lamar's "Section 80". I'm going to go through it track by track. Now I know I'm going to sound stupid after saying this but I haven't heard 2010's "Overly Dedicated" but I plan to listen and review it. Anyway right off the back this album is great. "F*ck Your  Ethnicity" isn't one of my favorites. The beat is a little awkward to me. And the way his voice comes on the chorus is disrupting to me. It's auto tune and he is yelling it just doesn't fit to me. From there we hit a highlight of the album with "Hol' Up." The jazzy instrumental fits his voice perfectly and this is highlighted a few times on this project. Then from there we go into "A.D.H.D." which goes into the narrative he starts with the first track. This track also has it's own narrative as well. I like the way he brings up the crack outbreak in the 80's and other topics while sharing drinks and spending a night with a women. From there we go into the beautiful "No Makeup (Her Vice)."  Colin Munroe's voice sounds perfect for the less jazzy beat. The rock type drums with an E.D.M.-ish sound makes this a really good song. This is one of the few less jazz-type beats on the project. I really like production on this album. The next song is one of my absolute favorites. "Tammy's Song (Her Evils)" is too short. I like the beat its very synth driven. The little story he rights is nice as well. The little twist of  "Tammy" becoming a lesbian at the ending is very funny. Very good word play and lyricism on Kendrick's part. This is one of my top 5 favorite tracks on the project. Next after that is "Chapter 6" which suffers from the same disease as the previous track, it's too short. The jazz-type beat with the nice singing. I like the fact that Kendrick doesn't spit on this track. I can't really imagine him rapping over this track. Next is the track "Ronald Reagan Era." I like the way it starts with Astro bot singing straight in Kendrick dropping some real hard bars. I really like the second verse. The beat is perfect. The whole song sounds very angry. After that we go into "Poe Mans Dream (His Vice)." I love the brooklyn sample. After listening to this more than once I realized kendrick spits really hard on this too. Its a very good song. Now that I'm on the halfway point of the album this is the halfway point of the blog. I'll fish this up next week.

Updates and Reviews Coming Soon

Well, we have had some setbacks as a group. We need to get going. We have made a list of things we want to review when we get started. We are going to each do two reviews a month. That makes for 6 reviews every month. We plan to get started posting these by next month at the most by December. The first album I plan on reviewing is the hip hp album, "Mellowhigh". It features rappers Domo Genesis and Hodgy Beats. Other rapper Left Brain produced the full album as well. All 3 artist are part of the hip hop collective Odd Future. The group also has other names such Wolf Gang, Golf Wang, and the Loiter Squad. They reached fame with the Odd Future Tape in 2007. Since then they have a huge following and have released many more albums. With them being more modern artist I felt like that was a good place to start with my blog. Now here is a picture of Snoop Dogg , a artist my friend Angel plans to review for our 20% project.

1st Blog

Hi. I'm not the type of person to usually do a blog but here I am. I have a 20% project for my 2nd period English class at Savanna High School. I am going to post music reviews on here and on youtube.  I love music. My dad is a musician and so is most of my family. My uncle is world famous percussionist, Leon Mobley. My family wants me to grow up to be the next musical Mobley. Music has always been apart of me. I am a member of Savanna's symphonic band. I plan to review different types of music, albums, artist , and anything out of the ordinary when it comes to music. I also plan to learn about the music industry. If I plan to be a musician, like my family wants, I'll need to know what it takes to make it in the industry. Me and my fellow group members, Angel and Poyesh, plan to start filming these videos by next week. We are going to rate the albums or songs from 1 to 10 and explain why we gave it that rating. I am really excited for the video taping. I'm not used to writing about myself so these blogs might be weird. I'm not a blogging person but I'll get used to it. I'm supposed to put a picture so here is a funny picture of Kanye West, An artist I plan to review.
